Budget-Worthy Find: HI Los Angeles Santa Monica Hostel
Just two blocks from the beach, this clean and well-managed hostel is hands-down one of the best-value places to stay in all of LA. You’ll find both dorms and private rooms, a chill common area, and a friendly international vibe.
If you’re solo or traveling with a small group of friends and want to spend your money on experiences—not hotel rooms—this is your place. You can walk everywhere, meet other travelers, and fall asleep to the sound of ocean air for under $60 a night.
Mid-Range with Perks: Bayside Hotel
If you want something private and a bit more polished than a hostel, Bayside Hotel is a smart upgrade. It’s still one of the more affordable hotels this close to the beach, and its unpretentious, clean style makes it a favorite for budget-conscious couples or small groups.

And, Marina del Rey is probably one of the safest neighborhoods in all of LA.
Close to Venice Beach and Santa Monica, you can access other beaches north or south by taking the bike path, driving, or using the Big Blue Bus.
However, Marina del Rey is far from other parts of the city. Getting to DTLA or Los Feliz is a trek, so be sure you’re ready to commit if you want to stay here!
🎒 Who This Neighorhood is Best For: Travelers who want a peaceful, coastal vibe close to LAX. Ideal for couples, small groups, or solo travelers who prefer to explore the Westside and don’t need to be smack in the middle of downtown LA.
Budget-Worthy Stay: Jolly Roger Hotel

This is my go-to recommendation for couples or a chill girls’ trip when you want comfort and a view—but don’t want to overspend. It’s tucked right on the marina, with a serene vibe and modern rooms that feel like a retreat.
My favorite part? SALT, the on-site restaurant. I’ve celebrated special occasions there, and every meal has been memorable—especially with the boats gliding by in the background. Bonus: the pool and deck area are perfect for unwinding after a beach day.
Los Feliz & Silverlake
If you’re looking for a more laid-back, artsy version of LA—with leafy streets, vintage shops, and the best oat milk lattes in the city—Los Feliz and Silver Lake are your spots.
These adjacent neighborhoods on LA’s Eastside have a totally different energy from the beach or downtown: more local, more relaxed, and way more you’ll want to move here.
They’re also strategically located—close to Griffith Park, the Greek Theatre, and Dodger Stadium, with easy access to Hollywood and Downtown. You’ll be away from tourist crowds but still within reach of everything.

Budget-Worthy: PodShare Echo Park
This communal-style hostel isn’t fancy, but it’s friendly, functional, and smack in the middle of Silver Lake and Echo Park. You’ll have easy access to Sunset Boulevard’s cool indie cafés and shops, plus public transportation routes that can get you to Griffith Park or DTLA.

Worth-the-Splurge: Cara Hotel
Ahh, this hotel is such a dream. Technically located at the edge of Los Feliz, this hotel is a vibe.
If you’re one who loves a clean, neutral aesthetic, you’ll love Cara Hotel.
The arched doors and white, earth-toned color palette are completely unexpected from the outside. The neighborhood around the hotel is a sharp contrast to the interior.
But one step inside and you’re transported.
I’ve had dinner and brunch at the restaurant at Cara Hotel, both spectacular experiences – it has a super romantic interior courtyard with trees lit with string lights. When I had dinner at Cara Hotel, I even spotted Marianna Hewitt at a table not far from mine!
Near LAX (The Airport)

Budget-Worthy Find: Holiday Inn Express LAX Airport
This spot is clean, affordable, and includes a free airport shuttle and breakfast—two major wins if you’re trying to save time and money. It’s not the kind of place where you’ll hang out for hours, but it’s reliable, safe, and solid for a one-night stay.
You’re also just a quick Lyft away from In-N-Out, which honestly feels like an LA layover rite of passage.
Mid-Range: Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Hotel
I’ve stayed here myself and was genuinely impressed—big comfy rooms, super quiet even being close to the airport, and the beds were amazing after a long day of travel.
The Sheraton also offers long-term parking, which is ideal if you’re flying out of LAX and need to leave your car somewhere secure. It’s a great pick for a stress-free stay at either end of your trip.

If you’re car-free and want culture, museums, and urban buzz
→ Stay in: Downtown LA (DTLA)
DTLA is metro-accessible and full of art, music, and nightlife. It’s not for the faint of heart—there’s real city grit here and it’s not always the prettiest—but if you’re down for it, you’ll be rewarded with amazing architecture, food, and a couple of budget-friendly hotels.
