Morning: Griffith Observatory & Hollywood Walk of Fame

Griffith Observatory
If it’s your first time at Griffith Observatory, you’re in for a treat! The views from up here are absolutely stunning – you get a panoramic look at LA and the iconic Hollywood Sign.
The observatory itself opens at 10am on Saturdays and Sundays, but if you’re an early bird, you can start your adventure even earlier with a hike on the Firebreak Trail.
Head to The Trails Restaurant on Fern Dell Drive. There’s free street parking and a parking lot farther up the road. You’ll spot the trailhead easily from there.
It’s a perfect way to kick off your day with some fresh air and incredible scenery!
Griffith Observatory is one of my favorite places in the entire city. I’ve come here countless times, at all times of the day.
I also love exploring the exhibits inside the Observatory. Be sure to head downstairs to see the ‘star wall,’ which is a timeline of Earth’s history.

Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a must-see for first-timers.
You’ll be starstruck as you stroll along Hollywood Boulevard, spotting the names of celebrities like Denzel Washington, Michael Jackson, Lucille Ball, Angela Bassett, and Walt Disney.
Don’t miss the TCL Chinese Theatre and Dolby Theatre – they’re iconic landmarks you’ll want to see.
My first time there (which was over 15 years ago when I was still living in Michigan) was unforgettable.
Go early to avoid the crowds. I strongly recommend going in the morning (around 10am – 12pm) because it’s also safer at that time of day.
Pro parking tip: Park at Ovation Hollywood for up to 2 hours for just $3 with validation, a much better deal than the open-air lots that can get pricey.
After soaking in the glitz and glamour of the stars, head to Mel’s Drive-In for a classic lunch.
If you’re up for more fun, check out Madame Tussauds Wax Museum or, for a touch of history, dine at Musso & Frank Grill, where celebs used to eat.
It’s a fantastic way to spend your morning in LA!
Midday: The Grove & Original Farmers Market

For a quintessential LA experience, head to The Original Farmers Market at The Grove.
Just a 15-minute drive from Hollywood, it’s the perfect spot to grab a late breakfast or lunch from a variety of food stalls.
Stroll through The Grove, the trendy shopping area next door, and enjoy some top-notch people-watching. You might even spot a celebrity or two (though don’t count on it)!
I used to live within walking distance of The Grove. On any given weekend, I spent countless hours here running errands and making returns at Gap, Nordstrom, and Athleta 😆
The Original Farmers Market is amazing, but it can be a bit pricey. There are so many options, I rarely know what to choose.
That said, I’ve tried a few gems: Bob’s Coffee & Doughnuts is a famous must-try, the crepe place is delightful, and Monsieur Marcel Gourmet Market is perfect if you’re craving a European/French vibe.
Pro tip: Visit The Grove during the holiday season! If you’re in town anytime between late November through the end of December, The Grove has spectacular decorations and lights. So festive!
Afternoon: LACMA, Rodeo Drive, & Beverly Hills

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
If you’re a first-timer in LA, LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) is a must-visit. You’ll find famous works by Frida Kahlo, Auguste Rodin, Diego Rivera, and Impressionists like Paul Cézanne and Rembrandt.
Don’t miss Chris Burden’s iconic Urban Light installation, a symbol of the city since it opened in February 2008.
People from all over flock to snap photos with this beloved piece, day and night. If you’re a Chris Burden fan, be sure to check out his Metropolis II as well.
Note: LACMA’s east campus is currently under construction, and the new David Geffen Galleries will house the permanent collection. Construction is projected to be completed in late 2024.
Having lived within walking distance of LACMA, I’ve visited countless times. It’s one of my favorite places in the city and perfect for a date night.
If you love art, you should definitely go. My experiences there have always been fantastic – the variety and quality of the collections are unmatched!

Beverly Hills & Rodeo Drive
For first-timers in LA, a visit to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive is a must.
Walking up and down these glamorous streets, you’ll feel like a movie star! Pop into Cartier to admire the stunning jewelry or grab a coffee and soak in the upscale atmosphere.
Don’t miss strolling along the cobblestone of Via Rodeo, which is filled with fancy art galleries.
For a ritzy afternoon pick-me-up, splurge at 208 Rodeo. Or, if you’re in the mood for something sweet, get a delicious chocolate truffle at Edelweiss Chocolates – I’ve tried them, and they’re absolutely delicious!
I’ve been to Beverly Hills countless times, and it’s always a fun, posh experience. I love looking at the fancy cars parked along the perfectly manicured streets.
The towering palm trees are the epitome of California cool. It’s the perfect spot to feel a little extra glamorous for the day! 🌴
Evening: Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade & Dinner

Santa Monica Pier & Third Street Promenade
End your day at the Santa Monica Pier, about 30 minutes from Beverly Hills.
If you have the chance, catch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean and take a walk along the beach. The sunsets here can be absolutely breathtaking!
Explore the pier’s attractions and amusement rides, before heading to Third Street Promenade for street performers, restaurants, and shops. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a busy day in LA!
I’ve spent countless evenings in Santa Monica, and I always have a great time.
I’ve done some shopping there and love relaxing on the beach while taking in the stunning views. The vibe is so lively.
There are plenty of people around leisurely exploring, and there’s always something happening. If you’re in LA, it’s a must-visit spot!

Optional Evening Activity: Dinner in Santa Monica
For a relaxing dinner, choose a beachfront restaurant in Santa Monica.
The Albright is right on the pier – I’ve been there for a beer, and it’s good! It’s great for casual fare like fish and chips, oysters, lobster roll, and french fries.
If you’re in the mood for something fancier, splurge at The Lobster. I ate there once and still remember the spectacular views. That dinner was unforgettable.
Another option is Shutters on the Beach, a hotel that’s located a bit away from the pier crowd. I’ve been to Shutters and loved it.
You can try Coast for a more casual beachfront spot or head to The Living Room, a lounge where you can get coffee or a drink.
On a budget? You could get takeout from Cha-Cha Chicken (Caribbean food!) and carry it down to the beach as the sun goes down. Soooo good!

Best Time to Visit Los Angeles
The best time to visit Los Angeles, especially for first-timers, is during the summer months.
The weather usually hits the 80s to 90s, making it perfect for beach days.
Just remember, the closer you are to the ocean, the cooler it will be at night – even in summer. So, be sure to pack a sweater or jacket for those evening strolls.
If you’re staying downtown or near Pasadena, expect it to be much warmer. Summer in LA offers the ideal mix of warm days and cooler nights, ensuring you can enjoy all the city has to offer, from the super chill beaches to the more lively urban areas.

Where to Stay in Los Angeles
1. West Hollywood
Known for its vibrant nightlife, trendy restaurants, and high-end shopping, West Hollywood (WeHo) is a lively area perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the action. It’s also home to the famous Sunset Strip and plenty of music venues and comedy clubs.
In West Hollywood, a hotel I recommend is Mondrian Los Angeles.
2. Santa Monica
Santa Monica offers beautiful beaches, the iconic Santa Monica Pier, and the bustling Third Street Promenade. It’s a fantastic spot if you want to spend time at the beach and soak up plenty of sun while still having access to great shopping and dining options.
In Santa Monica, a hotel I recommend is Shutters On The Beach.
3. Pasadena
Pasadena is a charming, historic city known for its beautiful architecture, including the famous Rose Bowl Stadium and the Norton Simon Museum. It’s pretty far from the rest of LA, but it does offer a more laid-back experience if you’re looking for that. It has tree-lined streets, lovely parks, and a variety of shops and restaurants in Old Town Pasadena.
In Pasadena, a hotel I recommend is Courtyard by Marriott Los Angeles Pasadena Old Town.
4. Marina del Rey
Marina del Rey is a picturesque coastal community known for its large marina and waterfront views. It’s ideal for those who love water activities like sailing and kayaking. The area boasts a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of dining options and is close to Venice Beach for more lively entertainment.
In Marina del Rey, a hotel I recommend is Marina del Rey Hotel.

Getting Around Los Angeles
The best way to get around Los Angeles in one day is by car.
LA is a HUGE city. Everything is spread out over a large area, so having a car gives you the flexibility and convenience to really maximize your time.
And I’ll be honest with you. Traffic can be a pain, especially during rush hour. I use Waze which helps me find quicker routes but it doesn’t solve everything. Be prepared to drive a lot when visiting LA.
That said, it’s still worth it to rent a car or use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft if you’re visiting for one day. Just keep in mind, the price of a rideshare might add up to be more than a one-day car rental.
Public transportation in LA exists, but it’s not as efficient for a one-day whirlwind tour. With a car, you can easily hop from Griffith Observatory to Hollywood, then to The Grove, LACMA, Beverly Hills, and finally Santa Monica.
If you don’t have a car, taking a one-day bus tour is the best way to see the sights.
These tours are designed to cover all the major attractions efficiently, providing a hassle-free way to experience LA’s highlights without worrying about navigation or parking.
FAQs
How many days in Los Angeles?
I suggest spending 3-5 days in Los Angeles to see the top sights. This one-day itinerary is jam-packed, and while I think you can do all of it, you have to be efficient and wise with your time. It doesn’t leave much room to roam.
If you have more time in LA, that’s even better!
How much money do I need for one day in Los Angeles?
I would budget at least $250 for food, a car rental, activities, and souvenir shopping. If you’re spending the night in LA, add on at least $275 for a hotel room.
If you’re on a budget, I suggest staying near the airport or in an off-the-beaten-path area like El Segundo, which still has the beach but is less touristy.
