Back in the days of prohibition, speakeasies were underground bars that only certain people were privy to. Because the sale of alcohol was illegal at the time, a cropping of clandestine bars sprang up, where people could socialize and drink even though alcohol consumption was against the law.

Located in the historic Gaslamp District, Prohibition is a speakeasy that pays homage to the Roaring Twenties. Behind an unmarked door, you’ll discover a hidden world reminiscent of the era when jazz music filled the airwaves and flapper dresses were in vogue.

5. False Idol
Embrace the tiki culture of the 1920s at False Idol, an acclaimed speakeasy located inside Craft & Commerce in Little Italy. Disguised as a walk-in cooler door (so cool, right?!), False Idol whisks you away to a tropical paradise filled with palm leaves, bamboo accents, and exotic drinks. Fun!!

6. Realm of the 52 Remedies
This 1920s-style, Chinese-themed speakeasy in San Diego serves an expansive menu of Asian dishes and creative craft cocktails. I recommend trying the Jade Empress, a cocktail featuring green tea, French banana liqueur, lemon, ming river bai jiu, rum, and salted cream cheese. Tasty!

Operated by the business next door, Common Theory Public House, 52 Remedies is accessed through an apothecary shop. Look for a white door, enter, and then you’ll pass by jars of herbs and ingredients.

7. Room 56
It takes some work to enter this 24-seat bar and lounge. You can only get in via secret code! That’s a true speakeasy right there, folks. Located at Moxy San Diego, Room 56 has a hidden entrance behind a bookcase, which you can enter only after speaking to the “librarian” to get the password.

8. The Grass Skirt
If you love all things tiki, then come to the Grass Skirt. Right when you walk in, you’ll be greeted by a giant tiki statue! You can really get a fun island party going here with an atmosphere like this one.

I suggest trying the Lava & Ice cocktail, which features serrano-infused tequila, Jamaican rum, lime, pineapple, coconut, and pomegranate. Delicious! Knock one down, then have the dan dan noodles to fill your stomach.
