During my recent stay in the city, I made a YouTube video with some of the best places to visit during your San Diego weekend. You can watch it above!

Should I go to San Diego for a weekend?

My answer is a resounding YES! I hear you asking, is 2 days enough in San Diego?

In my honest opinion, you can see a few of the main attractions in two days, but if you have three days to spare, you’ll gain a broader overview of the city and have more time to relax.

With all this in mind, let’s plan your essential weekend in San Diego itinerary!

Day 1: Morning – Unpack and Unwind in San Diego

When you arrive in a new destination, I always think it’s important to take a beat and settle into your surroundings. Enjoy a dip in the pool, a rejuvenating spa treatment, or relax with a coffee al fresco.

I stayed at the Andaz San Diego in the Gaslamp Quarter in a king deluxe room. The hotel is perfectly placed for restaurants, buzzing nightlife and entertainment, plus, there’s a fabulous rooftop pool!

Lunch – Find a Great Place to Dine

If, like me, you want to embrace the vacation vibe sooner, rather than later, you could stop for lunch before heading out to explore the city.

San Diego is brimming with stylish cafes, delis for snacks and picnic foods, restaurants and brewhouses. I love Liberty Public Market. You can find so many options here from tacos, kebabs, lobster rolls and donuts, plus, the architecture is amazing. Alternatively, treat yourself, like we did, to bunch at Herb & Wood, one of the city’s best eateries!

Depending on where you stay, the Gaslamp Quarter, Downtown San Diego, Little Italy, and Broadway are all great areas to find delicious food.

Afternoon – Explore the Highlights of Balboa Park

One of my first stops in the city is always Balboa Park – a delight to visit in any season. The 1,200-acre landscape is filled with towering palm trees, floral displays, and Spanish Colonial architecture. The grounds are open 24/7, so you can fit the park into your itinerary at any time during your stay.

Balboa Park is home to a multitude of attractions ranging from the San Diego Museum of Art containing works by Italian, northern European and Impressionist masters including Renoir, Matisse, and Klimt.

After browsing the brushstrokes, you can walk to San Diego Natural History Museum, or if you’re traveling with children, you might enjoy the wildlife at San Diego Zoo or head to San Diego Air & Space Museum with a multitude of interactive exhibits.

Personally, my favorite place in Balboa Park is the Japanese Friendship Garden. The garden highlights the link to San Diego’s twin city Yokohama in Japan and features sunken gardens, statues, tranquil koi ponds, and water features.

If you want to learn about Balboa Park highlights and hidden gems, there are guided walking tours available, too!

Evening – Dinner or Foodie Tour of the Gaslamp Quarter

gaslamp quarter is a must during your weekend in san diego

When it comes to dining out during your San Diego weekend getaway, there is no shortage of options. Whether you want to feast on some of the city’s finest stacked burgers, Mexican tacos, freshly caught local seafood or creamy ice cream and sweet treats, there are a variety of cuisines on offer.

Alternatively, let someone else do the hard work and book a fun food and drink tour of the Gaslamp Quarter!

Day 2: Morning: Hiking at Torrey Pines

Let’s get real. Nobody wants to overexert themselves on a weekend away. After all, you work hard all week – you deserve some R&R! That said, I couldn’t write this post without recommending a short hike at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.

For the best ocean views and perfect Instagram spots, I recommend the Torrey Pines Beach Trail loop which takes around an hour.

If that sounds too much for you, the Yucca Point Trail with its cliffside viewpoints, takes half the time. You can make a stop to overlook the ocean, enjoy the present moment and connect to the sounds of nature. It’s the best way to start your day!

Lunch – Oceanfront Dining or Light Bites

Time your trail trek to conclude just before lunchtime, and drive into La Jolla for lots of dining options. You can enjoy fresh, locally-sourced plates of food at one of the top 100 most scenic restaurants in the U.S – Georges at the Cove or find places serving authentic Mexican cuisine or deli sandwiches if light bites are more your thing.

Afternoon – Sea Lions on La Jolla Cove Walk

After a delicious lunch, I love to take a walk along La Jolla Cove path. The oceanfront walkway leads to one of the most popular beaches in the area, plus, it’s a great place to snorkel as there’s myriad sea life.

The La Jolla Cove seals, and sea lions, are a highlight for tourists, often found lounging on the beach, by the caves or basking on the rocks by the tide pools in the California sunshine. If you have time, you can kayak here, too!

La Jolla Shopping Spree

La Jolla has some of the city’s best shopping, and there are plenty of stores to indulge in a spot of retail therapy. Most of the boutiques and specialty stores sell everything from the latest fashions to colorful ponchos, interior décor, and hand-crafted jewelry. You’ll shop until you drop here!

Evening – Sunset at Cabrillo National Monument

On your return journey from La Jolla, make a stop at Cabrillo National Monument. The monument pays homage to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a European explorer who arrived on the west coast in 1542.

Arrive just before sunset to marvel at the changing colors of the sky in a magical location on the peninsula.

Dinner by the Ocean

Not ready to return to your hotel? There are several restaurants a short drive from the monument on route back into Downtown San Diego serving California and Mexican inspired eats, fresh seafood, and bar snacks.

A few great restaurants:

Day 3: Morning – Coronado Island Life

outdoor activities weekend in San Diego

This might be the final day of your San Diego weekend, or you may decide to replace the day two itinerary for this one if you don’t want to drive too far. After beginning your day with a leisurely breakfast, you can either drive or hop on the ferry to Coronado Island.

Movie fans will already have heard of Coronado Island. Four-star iconic Hotel del Coronado and Coronado Beach were filming locations for the film “Some like it Hot” starring Marilyn Monroe.

When I visit here, l love to spend time on the sparkling beaches (courtesy of Mica minerals that make them glisten), browse specialty shops along Orange Avenue and relax in oceanfront restaurants while photographing San Diego’s skyline.

There are also lots of outdoor activities to enjoy on Coronado Island. You can set sail, learn to surf, kayak, cycle or even partake in a gondola cruise!

Lunch in Little Italy

When you return to San Diego, I think lunch in Little Italy is a great idea. Little Italy is an incredible culinary hotspot with cozy restaurants and cafes, craft brewhouses, wineries and Piazza della Famiglia – a lively European-style plaza with a central fountain.

extraordinary desserts weekend in san diego
extraordinary desserts

While here, pop into Extraordinary Desserts for the best cake and cookies in the city! If you want to take some incredible Italian food home with you, also make a stop at Filippi’s – they make the best sausages. My family loves getting together to grill these at least once every year! We drive all the way out to San Diego to get these sausages.

Afternoon – Check out the USS Midway Museum

If you still have time to spare, you can enjoy a virtual experience on America’s favorite aircraft carrier museum USS Midway. A must for aviation enthusiasts, there are 30 restored aircraft on board.

This tour envelops you in the sights, sounds and real-life experiences that take place aboard an aircraft carrier.

Evening – Go All Out On Your Last Night

End your weekend in Downtown San Diego with a fancy dinner or take a captivating City Lights Tour accompanied by music and storytelling. It’s a great way to conclude a weekend in San Diego.
