First Impressions of the Western Front Hotel

Rolling into St. Paul, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The town is pretty small, and I wasn’t sure how much there’d be to do. But the moment I pulled up to the Western Front Hotel, I knew I had made a good call.

The hotel is well-designed and thoughtfully put together. Everything from the sign out front to the cozy lobby made it feel inviting. It strikes a nice balance between rustic charm and modern comfort—like they actually care about the guest experience.

Check-in was smooth, and the staff were just… so nice. Not fake-nice. Actual friendly humans who seemed genuinely happy to have someone visiting.

Within 15 minutes, I’d been welcomed, handed a room key, and was already eyeing the fire pit in the backyard like, “Yep, this is going to be a good weekend.”

The Room

After three and a half hours of driving through the mountains, I was more than ready to crash—and thankfully, the room was great. It was big, clean, and felt really cozy without trying too hard. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was spotless, and I had plenty of room to move around without bumping into my stuff.

Honestly, I was just happy to have a quiet, comfortable space to relax in. It was exactly what I needed.

Every morning, I got a metal pail filled with breakfast items delivered right to my door. I grabbed it and ate while I was getting ready—super convenient.

One morning it was yogurt, fruit, and a muffin. Another day, a breakfast sandwich and juice. It’s a simple idea, but I loved it. You don’t have to get dressed or go anywhere. Just open the door and boom—breakfast.

The Backyard Fire Pit + ATV Rides

It was raining while I was there, so I didn’t get to sit by the fire pit or roast marshmallows in the backyard—but on a dry day, this would be such a cute spot to hang out. It’s the kind of thing that makes the hotel feel extra homey.

Now, the ATV ride? That I did do—and I’m so glad I pushed myself to try it. I was nervous beforehand (I don’t exactly scream “outdoorsy”), but it turned out to be totally safe and really fun. I didn’t get covered in mud—thankfully—because that is not my vibe. Jody, who drove the ATV, knew I wanted to stay clean, and he made sure of it.

It was exhilarating, and the view from the top was beautiful. A great way to unplug and get into nature for an afternoon.

Puerto Nuevo Restaurant

On my first night, I had dinner at Puerto Nuevo, the Tex-Mex restaurant inside the hotel. The food was actually really good. The menu has a little bit of everything—tacos, salads, even pasta and ribs. I ended up eating there both nights, and it totally hit the spot.

It’s super convenient to have a solid restaurant right downstairs, especially in a town this small.

Fun fact: on Thursdays, they serve free oysters from Apalachicola Bay in Florida. They’re huge—and if you’re into oysters, you’ll love it!

Exploring St. Paul

St. Paul is small, but it’s got personality. One of the things I liked most was how walkable it is.

You can stroll around town, grab coffee, pop into a shop or two, and actually chat with locals. I took a little walk on my first afternoon there and ended up talking to a couple of locals who gave me tips about the area—super friendly and welcoming.

There’s a cute coffee shop just down the street from the hotel called The Coffee Station. You can sit inside and hang for a bit, or hit the drive-thru if you’re on the run (pun not intended, but kind of perfect).

And right across from the Western Front is Mamaw’s Café, a casual spot with good food and that classic small-town diner vibe. I had the chicken salad croissant sandwich there upon Mamaw’s recommendation, and it was divine.

If you’re into hiking (like me), the Clinch River is just a five-minute drive from the hotel. It’s actually the most bio-diverse river in the Northern Hemisphere—kind of wild, right?

People come here to kayak, canoe, fish, or just relax by the water. I didn’t make it out on the water this time, but it’s clear why they call it the Heart of Appalachia’s nature-made waterpark.

The area also has deep historical roots. Daniel Boone passed through here, and early settlers built homes along the river’s edge. It’s one of those places that seems quiet at first but has a surprising amount of depth once you dig in.

That said, this is definitely a weekend destination. It’s perfect for a short trip, but you’ll probably run out of things to do after a couple of days.

Couples looking for a slice of “real America” will find it here. It’s quiet, it’s scenic, and it feels totally unplugged from city life in the best way. Whether you’re road-tripping through the region or just need a weekend away, it hits that cozy-romantic vibe without being overly “done.”

And if you’re a solo traveler—especially one who enjoys hiking or exploring lesser-known places—you’ll probably love it. I felt safe the whole time, and the locals were incredibly kind. It’s a chill spot to slow down, get outside, and reset for a few days.

I didn’t know what I was signing up for when I booked a stay in St. Paul, Virginia, but the Western Front Hotel turned out to be exactly what I didn’t know I needed.

It was comfortable, unique, and full of little touches that made the whole experience feel thoughtful and personal.

Would I go back? Yes! Especially for a quick weekend getaway when I want to unplug, eat good food, and maybe do something a little outside my norm (like riding an ATV through the mountains).
