The Craddock Terry is a boutique hotel housed in a former shoe factory, with a charming blend of history, design, and Southern character. The Craddock Terry is housed in what was literally once a shoe factory—and there are reminders of that history everywhere, in the most charming ways that I absolutely adored. There’s a big red stiletto out front you can snap a photo with, the same red heel painted on the building’s facade, and original pay stubs and coins from the factory days framed inside. 

The lobby even has a full wall of shoes and massive factory windows that let in tons of natural light. It feels historic but fun, not dusty or dated.

In keeping with the theme, even breakfast gets a nostalgic twist. Each morning, I opened my door to find a wooden shoeshine box filled with breakfast goodies—granola, yogurt, juice, a pastry. It wasn’t over-the-top, but it was memorable and made mornings feel kind of special.

My room was massive. We’re talking high ceilings, exposed brick, and enough space to actually unpack and breathe. I even had a bathtub—so of course I took a soak the first night, threw on the robe, and fully leaned into my main character moment.

One of the first things I noticed was that the staff was genuinely kind. They were extra helpful responding to my (many) questions at check-in and offered me essential oils I could use in the diffuser in my room. Such a nice touch!

They also suggested I try out one of the bikes available to borrow at the front, since I didn’t come with a car (I took the Amtrak train from D.C.)! They gave me some great local recs and never made things feel transactional. 

The hotel is also pet-friendly (huge win), and it works for a mix of travelers: families, couples, and solo travelers in Virginia, like me.
